Public Safety Telecommunicator/Police Records Clerk I
Police Department - Lexington, North Carolina
Starting Pay Range: $13.1510 - $19.3846 per hour, plus excellent benefits

Performs responsible technical and clerical work on a 12-hour rotating shift monitoring and responding to radio and telephone calls for law enforcement and after hours’ utilities. Worker is subject to stand-by and call back to duty.


  • Receives calls for services, dispatches personnel and equipment, maintains records, files and logs, enters data, prepares reports;
  • Answers all incoming calls through administrative and emergency phone lines;
  • Enters the call into Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and dispatches personnel and equipment;
  • Monitors separate radio frequencies, handles paging for police, fire and special units;
  • Operates DCI computer to communicate with other law enforcement agencies throughout the state and nation;
  • Performs criminal history searches, compiles and updates records;
  • Assists the public by phone or in person; receives complaints, makes copies, provides information and/or direction;

  • Combination education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school;
  • Good knowledge of standard office practices, procedures and equipment; 
  • DCI certification within 120 days of employment; 
  • Ability to maintain access to, and security of, highly sensitive materials; 
  • Ability to make arithmetic calculations using whole numbers, fractions, and percentages; 
  • Ability to handle emergency calls and deal with the public under stressful conditions while remaining calm; 
  • Ability to speak distinctly; 
  • Commissioning or ability to obtain commission as Notary Public.

Requires the ability to exert up to 35 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently to move objects. Work requires fingering, feeling, and repetitive motions. Stooping, bending, reaching, pushing and pulling are required for retrieving files. Vocal communication is required to convey detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines and observance of general surroundings and activities, determining accuracy, thoroughness and neatness of work.
