Salary:  $34,653-$54,413

Performs communications and various tasks for the police and fire department functions in the community.  Starting salary depends on qualifications. Typical hiring range for this position is ($34,653-$38,189) full range to $54,413.

Typical Tasks
An employee in this class receives incoming routine and emergency calls, dispatches and maintains contact with police units; and  dispatches calls for fire and mutual aid as required. Operates dispatch equipment, computer terminal connected to the Division of Criminal Information (DCI) and the National Crime Information Center. Work also involves the performance of detailed record keeping, monitoring public and private alarms,  typing and filing of police incidents and filing of related documents.. Work requires frequent public contact requiring tact, firmness, decisiveness and the ability to obtain necessary information from people who are under extreme stress and choose appropriate courses of action. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy and state and federal law, supplemented with specific directions from sworn personnel. Work is normally performed under the supervision of the Telecommunications Supervisor and is evaluated through observation, monitoring of radio communication, discussion and review of reports.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge and operational experience of multi-channel radio and multi-line telephone systems.
  • Working knowledge of the functions, practices and procedures of Police and  Fire Departments.\
  • Working knowledge of the physical layout of the Town and surrounding areas
  • Ability to accurately receive and clearly  transmit radio communications.
  • Ability to assess people and situations, to apply sound judgment, to remain calm under stressful conditions and to elicit sufficient and essential information for dispatching and assisting field personnel.
  • Ability to work simultaneously on different calls with different agencies and staff.
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete work activity records and files, including operating computer terminals.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain continuous certification through the NC Sheriff's Education & Training Standards and certification through the Division of Criminal Information.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from high school and some communications, dispatching or other public contact work preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to pass a strenuous background investigation that includes credit checks, interviews with family, neighbors and peers, deception testing and drug testing.

A complete form F-3 : North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission Personal History Statement must be attached to your Town of Apex application.  F-3 Forms can be obtained from the North Carolina Department of Justice website at  Dishonesty, omission, misrepresentation, etc. on the F-3 will cause the candidate to be terminated from further processing. Applications submitted without a completed and notarized F-3 form will not be considered.
Candidates selected to interview will be required to bring the original F-3 form submitted with the application to the interview.  The form will be notarized onsite.  

The Public Safety Communications Center operates on a 24X7 365 basis.  The typical shifts for this position are 0600-1800, 1800-0600 and 1200-0000.

National Dispatcher Selection Test and Open House: May 9th or 11th from 6:30p.m.-9:30p.m. at the Apex Police Department.   Candidates will have the option of selecting the test date.  The test objectively assesses a candidate's skill level in five important areas: Reading, Comprehension, Listening, Problem Solving, Prioritizing, and Multi-Tasking.  Note: A passing score on the written exam does not guarantee advancement to the next step of the recruitment process.  Other factors including, but not limited to, test scores, experience, education and work history will determine the applicants who advance to the next step in the process.
Interviews: Week of May 23rd.
